The Woman Drowning in Black Tides

The Woman Drowning in Black Tides Series was the artist's first photographic work at the age of 21. It expresses the subtle pressure that young women at the time experienced, as they felt stifled, confused, depressed, and inexplicably overwhelmed, involuntarily swirled into emotional black tides. The high-contrast tension emphasizes the intense emotions experienced when in the depths of despair, making the important even more important and rendering the unimportant nonexistent. The images convey a sense of helplessness, frustration, confusion, and elusive inner feelings. The physical changes, inner feelings, societal expectations, norms, and rules of etiquette placed on women, whether reasonable or unreasonable, intricately encircle the blossoming youth at all times and in countless ways, making it difficult to escape.
