Conker
Acrylic¸ oil paintings, 1998-1999
Statement / Conker represents the image of a nut to indicate the contemporary female status consciously. The image takes a symbolic position of a beautiful, sun-like, spiny shell, rendered in bright and decorative color. I have observed that most women still pay much attention to outside appearances, rather than interior qualities during their growing and escaping the patriarchal value. The shell is cast as a woman whose struggle makes her assume sharp powers in the context of the patriarchal society - represented by the conker's spikes. She doesn't have enough confidence, ability and real feminine tradition to face male culture, so she makes her outside become a powerful and beautiful figure, but semi-consciously. However, there is an enclosed “chora” implies an unconscious area, a resource of female power and energy within in these appetence. This “chora” still ignore the real, unknown and different powers which issues from the female body, In my opinion, if a woman wants to discover and develop her own system and power, she must suffer a period of painful experience to struggle as the work of Splits expressed . |
